If you have a real estate license in Ohio, you will need to renew it every three years in order to continue operating legitimately. This is the case regardless of whether you are a real estate salesperson or a broker.
The cost of renewing your Ohio real estate license will depend on whether you do this on time — or have to pay a late penalty fee — as well as whether you are a broker or a real estate agent.
In this guide, we break down how you can complete your Ohio Real Estate License Renewal, detailing how much this will cost, and what continuing education (CE) requirements you will need to complete before submitting your application.
Ohio Real Estate Renewal Cost
The total cost of your Ohio Real Estate License Renewal will depend on several factors:
Status | Real Estate Salesperson | Real Estate Broker |
Renewal Cost Online | $182 | $243 |
Late Penalty Fee | $91 | $121.50 |
Reactivation Fee | $34 | $34 |
Total Cost | $182 – $307 | $243 – $398.50 |
On top of this, you’ll need to add the cost of purchasing a real estate CE course, as this is a legal requirement in the state of Ohio.
Recommended Continuing Education Course
Our #1 qualified real estate education course is The CE Shop. We found that it offers an exceptionally large variety of packages, and can be very helpful when it comes to guiding you through Ohio’s CE requirements.
Ohio Real Estate Continuing Education
You will need to complete the following CE requirements in order to renew your real estate license in Ohio.
Active Ohio Real Estate License
You must take 30 hours of Ohio Real Estate Commission (OREC)-approved CE courses, including three hours of each of the following required courses:
- Core Law
- Civil Rights
- Canon of Ethics
Note: Ohio real estate brokers are also required to complete a three hour Broker Responsibility course.
If this is your first birthday since receiving your license you are not required to complete these CE hours in order to renew.
Regardless of whether you are an agent or a broker, you will need to complete the remaining hours of CE by taking elective courses. These can be general real estate courses, or courses that fall within — but are not identical to — the above categories.
Inactive Ohio Real Estate Agents
In Ohio, it is not necessary for inactive salespersons over the age of 70 to complete these CE requirements until reactivation.
However, inactive brokers over the age of 70 are required to complete the three-hour Broker Responsibility Course.
Keep in mind that you will not be able to engage in any real estate sales or brokerage activity with an inactive license.
Note: You will be able to renew your license for up to one year after its expiration date by paying a late renewal fee (50% of your license’s renewal fee) plus a $34 activation fee.
If more than one year passes since your license expires, you will no longer be able to renew it, and will instead be required to reapply in order to get your Ohio real estate license.
Renew Ohio Real Estate License
You will be able to renew your Ohio real estate license online or by mail.
Online
You can renew your real estate license online through the Ohio online renewal portal. If this is your first time renewing online, you will need to register first.
We recommend that you complete your CE training at least 10 days before your license expires. This will ensure that there is enough time for it to be processed.
You can file a renewal application with educational compliance form to the Ohio Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing at the following address:
Ohio Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing
77 S. High St., 20th Floor
Columbus, OH 43215
You will need to submit your fees alongside your application.
