Montana Real Estate License Renewal

If you have a real estate license in Montana, you will need to renew it every year in order to continue operating legitimately. This is the case regardless of whether you are a real estate agent or a broker.

The cost of renewing your Montana real estate license will depend on whether you do this on time (or have to pay a late penalty fee) as well as whether you are a broker or a real estate agent.

In this guide, we break down how you can go about completing your Montana Real Estate License Renewal, including how much it will cost and what continuing education (CE) requirements you will need to satisfy before you submit your application.

Montana Real Estate Renewal Cost

The total cost of your Montana Real Estate License Renewal will depend on several factors, including whether your license is active and whether you need to pay a penalty fee:

On top of this, you’ll need to add the cost of purchasing a real estate CE course, as this is a legal requirement in the state of Montana.

Montana Real Estate Continuing Education

You will need to complete the following CE requirements in order to renew your real estate license in Montana.

Montana Active Real Estate License Renewal

12 hours of approved continuing education real estate courses. These are not specified, and can include:

  • Code of Ethics
  • Predatory and Fraudulent loans
  • Montana license Law
  • Montana real estate finance
  • Contract law and sales agreements

Note: As a supervising broker, you will need to include four hours of CE in supervising broker courses.

Montana Inactive Real Estate License Renewal

In Montana, real estate agents can convert their license into inactive status by filing the Renewal Application form and paying a $20 fee.

Keep in mind that you will not be able to engage in any real estate sales or brokerage activity with an inactive license, but you will still need to renew it every year in order to prevent it from being expired or terminated.

Note: You will be able to renew your license for up to two years after its expiration date by filing a Renewal Application form and paying both the renewal and the late penalty fee.

If more than two years pass since your expiration date, your license will become terminated. This means you will no longer be able to renew it and will need to reapply in order to get your Montana real estate license.
