  • You will need to possess either a high school diploma or a General Educational Development (GED) diploma, as defined under IC 20-20-6 (before its repeal) or IC 22-4.1-18-1

Keep in mind that, if you are currently licensed in another state, you will be able to contact the Indiana Real Estate Commission to check if reciprocity agreements might allow you to obtain an Indiana real estate license without an examination.

Note: A “salesperson” or “agent” license is called a “broker” license in Indiana; this is purely a difference in name, not in the scope of work.

Step 2: Complete the Mandatory Pre-Licensing Education

In addition to the general requirements outlined above, there are certain educational prerequisites you’ll be expected to meet in order to be able to apply for an Indiana real estate license.

Step 3: Pass the Indiana Real Estate Exam

The next step you’ll need to complete is to pass the Indiana Real Estate exam, which is administered by PSI and consists of two sections:

  • National Portion: This section includes 75 questions on topics like real estate principles, practices, law, and ethics. You’lll have 150 minutes to complete it
  • State Portion: This consists of 50 questions focused on Indiana real estate law, regulations, and standards. You’ll have 90 minutes to complete it

Keep in mind that you must achieve a passing score of 75% in both the national and state portions of the exam in order to proceed with the licensing process.

In order to schedule your real estate exam, you can either make an online reservation via the PSI website or call (855) 746-8172.

If this is your first time using the platform, you’ll be required to create an account, after which you’ll be shown step-by-step instructions on how to complete the reservation.

Regardless of how you schedule your examination, you will need to pay an exam fee of $53 at the time of reservation because payments are not accepted directly at the test center.

Note: If you pass one section of the exam, but fail the other, you are only required to retake the section you did not pass (as long as you do so within one year of completing your pre-licensing education course).

Step 4: Find a Managing Broker

To ensure your real estate license gets issued in an active status, you will need to identify a managing broker or brokerage company to work under.

Specifically, once you’ve chosen a managing broker or brokerage firm to work with, you will need to download State Form 53053 (R / 4-23) and fill out Section A independently.

Then, you’ll need to forward the form to your managing broker or brokerage firm so they can complete and sign Section B.

Once you receive the signed form back, make sure to keep it safe because you will need to attach it with your application.

Note: If this form is not provided as part of your application, your license will be issued in an “unassigned” status or, if you prefer, in “inactive” status.

Step 5: Submit a License Application

After passing the state real estate exam and satisfying all other licensing requirements, you’ll be ready to move onto submitting your license application.

To do this, you will need to visit Indiana’s Licensing Portal and submit your completed application along with a $60 non-refundable processing fee (paid by credit or debit card).

When submitting your application, you’ll also need to attach a digital copy of your Licensing Examination Score Report and include the names and license numbers of your managing broker or brokerage company.

Keep in mind that a customer service representative may contact you to request additional documentation for your application (if necessary).

Note: In the state of Indiana, license applications are processed in the order in which they are received in order to ensure fairness for all applicants; there is no expedited filing option.

Step 6: Application Review

If you’ve managed to get this far, congratulations! With your application submitted and all the other licensing requirements satisfied, in most cases you should receive a letter from the Indiana Real Estate Commission containing your license document, usually within 10 business days. This can vary, though, depending on the current workload.

Indiana Real Estate License Renewal

In order to keep your license valid and continue working as a real estate sales agent, you’ll need to complete your post-licensing education requirements.

Specifically, brokers licensed on or after July 1, 2014, will need to complete 30 hours of approved post-licensing education within the first two years of licensure.

This education, which covers topics like Indiana real estate transactions, financing, contracts, and ethical practices, is designed to prepare you for a successful career in real estate.

The 30 hours of post-licensing education you complete in the first two years will not only fulfill your initial requirements, but also cover your continuing education during that period.
